How do you register a name for a small home business? Is it necessary?

We're opening a small home business. Do you need to protect/register the name of your business for tax purposes, banking, and all of the other nuances that come because you run a personal business and you want to be above the board, totally legitimate? If so, who do you call? What do you do? Help us Obi-wan Kenobi, you're our only hope.

Most of this is based on Federal & State Law. I would try looking at the Small Business Administration web-site for details. Then find your state office that handles the same issues.

Starting any business is something that should be considered carefully. I highly recommend doing research before investing your resources.

You should do a name search and register your business name for at least the state you are located in. Many banks etc won’t deal with companies whose names aren’t registered.
Most state websites will have info in searches and registering a business name. It will probably cost less than you’d expect. When I do mine in NV it is only going to cost something like 35.00 to search and 25.00 to reserve the name anually.

Go down to city hall and get a dba license for about $100 and you’re covered.
