Millions begin creating a home based business with no desire for a job as their means for living. They plug into (hopefully) a good company and set the view toward building a large organization. Many say it's the purest form of free-enterprize.
The rewards are plenty- freedom, flexibility, residual income, no boss- and it goes on from there. It's cause to wonder. If it's so appealing, why do most fail to get very far up the trail?
As someone who has worked (and played) with a home-office base for over a decade, I'm going to point out three things, that, if mastered, or at least managed, will get your successful home-based business results graph going in a strong direction. If this is what you're up to, please don't skim over these, but rather, take a good hard look at which one(s) have been tripping you up- or are most likely to get you off the track you set out on to begin with. There are other pitfalls, here are three that are often overlooked.
1) Make your daily action list your new supervisor. Of course, you can do anything you want, and don't need to use a daily planner if you don't want it. The problem with that is if you have no daily checklist of things that are central to the game, you probably have little idea of the daily actions that you are making intentional. CEO's don't get there by accident and you are the CEO of Y-O-U. It's a lot like throwing the bowling ball down the lane in a complete fog, and all you know is whether you heard the ball hit the gutter, or some pins smash. It's tough to know what progress is being made if you haven't put your actions in existence by putting the pen to them and looking to see what got done- or not.
2) Focus on activity that brings about highest long term results. It's easy to get lost in little things and delude yourself into thinking worthwhile effort is being done. Don't let yourself be misguided. An ant on a circular track may walk for hours, but by day's end he's still going nowhere. Stand back from things long enough to notice what activities have or will do that with your progress. Look at your schedule by days end, and scan to see which items would cause the majority of your results. How many hours were spent instead of other things more important?
3) Create accountability where needed. This one can make you or break your business, and you'll want to be candid about how much you need. Have you got to the end of your work time, only to see that important things weren't seeing the light of day? Been there. Perhaps you can tie in your main tasks with a daily reward of some kind. Perhaps you can tell someone that TV is off limits to you unless X is done. Creativity can come into play here. Put in place things you feel will work for you. Use a friend or even pay someone if necessary.
OK, it's confession time for me. (And I hope it helps bring this to home for you). I put off writing this article for days and let other things take over. At this moment I'm kneeling on two couch pillows as I write. Why, you ask? This afternoon, I wrote down that I couldn't sit in my office chair until I finished this article first.
A little crazy? Maybe. The key is- it did the job. I'm now taking license to construct a not-so-ancient Chinese proverb,- and I'm not Chinese. “Better to lose comfort and create momentum, than sit in place and be stuck".” I'm referring to being stuck in a business going nowhere.
